Pete Holmes Tackles BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

There is no better riff on Christian Bale's Dark Knight Batman these days than the one courtesy of comedian Pete Holmes. His hysterical online shorts as the "Badman" on College Humor are all well worth watching. Holmes took to the stage at New York Comic Con this weekend to hype up his new late night TBS show, and judging by this video, he will be bringing his Batman parody along for the ride. He hits another home run with this send-up of the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman big screen epic.

Holmes also recently added X-Men to his target list to tear up. Hopefully we have a lot more comic book movie parodies to look forward to on his show.

Be sure to check out his Good Will Hunting Director's Cut parody starring Ben Affleck's Batman HERE.

The Pete Holmes Show debuts on October 28th after Conan on TBS.

Bryan Cranston Addresses Those Lex Luthor Casting Rumors... Again

There has been no shortage of online buzz when it comes to the 2015 sequel to Man of Steel, announced with great fanfare at Comic Con in July, which will showcase Superman and Batman together on the big screen and facing off for the first time. The web exploded with a tidal wave of outrage when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman opposite Henry Cavill's Man of Steel in a screenplay set to take a cue from the 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns.

Bryan Cranston's name has been bandied about (along with Mark Strong) as a candidate for the role of Lex Luthor (personally, after his bravado-laden performance in Pacific Rim, I would love to see Idris Elba get a crack at it). While Cranston has been receiving the most heat as of late, absolutely nothing beyond pure fan speculation has surfaced.

A rather ridiculous recent report from Cosmic Book News has received an awful lot of reposts, even from Rolling Stone. CBN is on the record that Cranston has already sealed the deal with WB. While that bit of news alone by no means requires a huge leap of faith, their subsequent claims lie on the far fetched side of the fence. They report Cranston has signed on for six pictures, Ben Affleck is inked for 13 (a 13 picture deal? Seriously? Chris Evans talked Marvel down from 9 to 6 before committing to play Captain America), and finally Matt Damon is in WB's sights for Aquaman or Martian Manhunter in Justice League.

Now back to Cranston. The Boston Globe caught up with the Breaking Bad star and thankfully asked if he was aware of the rampant online rumors of his alleged Lex Luthor multi-picture deal.

“I’ve heard that too,” he told the Globe. “Six? This is all news to me. I think that maybe my name is bandied about because I’m known to be bald. ‘What bald guy can we get?’ The reality is they can take any actor and shave his head or put a bald cap on him.”

When asked how a conversation might go between him and Gene Hackman, who played Lex Luthor opposite Christopher Reeve's big screen Superman from 1978-1987, Cranston laughed off the scenario. “I can just see how that phone call would go,” he said. “‘Gene? Hi, this is Bryan Cranston.’ ‘Who? Bryan Cranston? What do you want? How did you get this number?’ ”

We'll have to wait and see what comes of any of this. I'm always on board with the "Where's there's smoke there's fire" line of thinking with some online rumors, but following Affleck sealing the deal to play the next big screen Dark Knight, I think its safe to assume just anyone may be in talks to join the cast of the Man of Steel follow-up.

Cranston told the Globe if one thing's for certain, he will be pacing himself for the remainder of 2103, but nonetheless alludes that something big may be cooking. “I think I’ll relax the rest of the year. There’s some irons in the fire, things that people are talking about, but nothing is set.”

Stay tuned for more firm casting announcements soon. The untitled Man of Steel sequel is already set to shoot in Detroit in early 2104, whose gritty Motor City streets will double as both Metropolis and Gotham City.

Adam West, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton Weigh In On Affleck As Batman

Former Batmen Adam West and Val Kilmer voluntarily took to Twitter and threw their thoughts into the online nuclear firestorm that is Ben Affleck's casting as the next big screen Caped Crusader. While on the other side of the batcave, count on TMZ to ambush Michael Keaton for his thoughts on the situation as he was getting into his car.

IT'S OFFICIAL!! Superman & Batman Set To Share The Big Screen! Team-Up Set For 2015!

"I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you," says a bloodied and battered Batman to Superman at the end of The Dark Knight Returns, which was quoted at today's Warner Bros. Comic Con panel. With that, the Superman and Batman logos appeared together on Hall H's big screen, not so subtlety setting the stage for the follow-up to Man of Steel.

It looks like Henry Cavill will not be flying solo in the 2015 sequel to this summer's dark Superman reboot. Warner Bros. has plans for Batman to join him, and likely oppose him, on the big screen which will expand the cinematic DC Universe and test the waters ultimately for the studio's Justice League.

At the conclusion of this afternoon's WB / Legendary Pictures Comic-Con panel, Zack Snyder confirmed the heavily rumored World's Finest team-up of DC's two biggest heroes (following reports of the expected news scooped earlier today by the LA Times' Hero Complex and The Hollywood Reporter). Henry Cavill will once again fly as the Man of Steel, but Christian Bale has repeatedly gone on the record as having hung up the cowl and cape for good as Batman with 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

“It’s official that we are going to make another Superman movie," Zack Snyder told the crowd."I’ve poured through the DC universe for a way to tell this thing.” Snyder the brought Man Of Steel actor Henry Lennix on stage who quoted Batman from none other than Frank Miller's iconic 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, which saw the two heroes go head-to-head in a bloody battle.

The team-up angle looks to be the studio's solution for re-introducing Batman to moviegoers instead of a full-fledged solo reboot, allowing the now familiar face of Cavill to anchor the next actor cast as the Caped Crusader. Referencing The Dark Knight Returns as source material is certainly a way to really drive interest for the target fan base, and may deliver unexpected conflict to those not in the know.

Although reported by Hero Complex earlier in the day and was NOT confirmed, WB is rumored to also have the Flash on the film slate fast track for 2016, followed by the long-awaited Justice League big screen adventure in 2017.

As for MOS 2, Zack Snyder will return as director with a script by David S. Goyer, as previously announced. Man of Steel and The Dark Knight executive producer Christopher Nolan may also be on board in some capacity. Interestingly enough, Goyer has already penned a Flash screenplay, which has met with a positive response from Warners.

Also of note, no word of Wonder Woman's plans for movie stardom, or the future of Green Lantern, both of whom would be expected to unite along side Superman and Batman in Justice League. Whether these or any other DC heroes (Aquaman?) get the pre-League reboot treatment is still up the air.

Though the passage chosen from The Dark Knight Returns leave little doubt DC and WB will continue down the moody path set up in Man of Steel, and will have the two icons going head-to-head.

Here is the official WB Press Release:
"BURBANK, CA, July 20, 2013 – On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution,Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcomingfilm brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date inSummer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”

'Justice League' Now On Track With Christopher Nolan In Charge? Will We See Christian Bale Team Up With Henry Cavill?

In a move that makes absolutely perfect sense so it should be of no surprise IF proven true, Warner Bros. has reportedly put into motion a bulletproof plan for its troubled big screen version of Justice League that will team the collective forces behind The Dark Knight trilogy and the upcoming Man of Steel.

After a lengthy investigation, El Mayimbe over at Latino Review broke the big news last night, which was also backed up by Batman-On-Film, that Warners has finally and wisely handed the reigns of its big screen DC Universe over to Dark Knight mastermind Christopher Nolan. Nolan not only steered his Batman trilogy to critical acclaim and billions at the box office, he also oversaw production of the upcoming reboot of Superman, Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill and directed by Zack Snyder.

If you allow yourself to believe the positive online buzz from a recent pre-screening, WB is apparently over the roof at what they have on their hands with Man of Steel. With their multiple stalled attempts over the years at bringing Justice League to the big screen, and with both Batman star Christian Bale and Chris Nolan having retired from that franchise after The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. is left with only Man of Steel (and possibly 2011's failed Green Lantern) as anchor points for DC's answer to Marvel's The Avengers. Recent reports also point to the studio's disappointment and subsequent scrapping of the latest Justice League script penned by Gangster Squad's Will Beall.

According to Latino Review, Bale is now being courted to don the cape and cowl again, despite the closure seen in The Dark Knight Rises and his reluctance to participate in the proposed team-up film unless Nolan can convince him otherwise. WB's previous plan was to introduce the next big screen Caped Crusader in 2015's Justice League and then use that as a springboard to the next series of Batman films. With Nolan on board, its probably the only chance of seeing Bale return to the role.

Man of Steel director Zack Synder is reportedly also to be on board to produce Justice League and most probably first in line to direct (if Nolan doesn't want to helm it). Unconfirmed to return to this mix is screenwriter David Goyer, who is an integral part of the team as a key writer of the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel.

Few have doubted Henry Cavill's Superman as the only sure bet anchor for Justice League from the get go. A major unknown factor that remains regarding Man of Steel is to what extent would it be utilized in setting up the larger big screen DC Universe as Marvel has done by crossing over their big screen heroes in post-credits cameos. With Bale (until now) seemingly out of the loop, a quick generic Batman reference could have been made, or there was the big gamble of passing the cowl to Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a post-credits cameo. While incorporating Levitt would have allowed the Dark Knight continuity to remain intact for Justice League, it would have heavily watered down the Batman character.

For all intents and purposes securing Nolan's team seems like the best case scenario WB could bank on for Justice League. It appears they are finally done with half assing anything to do with what it takes to make this a guaranteed box office blockbuster. With Cavill and Bale starring, they would have two familiar faces in addition to incorporating The Dark Knight mythos. Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Green Lantern is still a major x-factor, though it would be silly to think WB does not have him signed to a firm multi-picture deal that would include Justice League. Then figuring out what to do with Wonder Woman and possibly The Flash are whole other issues altogether.

WB is facing a whole new world of tentpole competition. The Disney/Marvel team have had rampant success with their characters, which was cemented by The Avengers' over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales in 2012. That remains an open wound to Warners on a sheer business sense as they rapidly lose ground on the superhero battle field. WB also finds itself Harry Potter-less while Disney/Lucasfilm has an unlimited well to tap in addition to Star Wars on deck.

Green Lantern's failure at the box office was a huge blow to WB (you could technically go back to 2006's Superman Returns as the first big set-back), and losing Bale and Nolan left the studio with no choice but to plan a Batman reboot down the line. And frankly any way you look at it, what a thankless task it will be to follow in the footsteps of The Dark Knight trilogy.

Disney has their Joss Whedon / Kevin Feige camp, and added J.J. Abrams to spearhead the next wave of Star Wars films. Even 20th Century Fox has brought writer Mark Millar aboard to properly oversee and intergrade their big screen Marvel properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four. WB still needs a guiding force for these potential tentpoles in the long run, and there are no better ones to retain the services of than their current in-house creative powerhouse team of Nolan and Snyder. The biggest franchises on the big screen are now run behind-the-scenes by A-List filmmakers and the future of the DC heroes is nothing to take lightly or shortchange with a changing of the guard.

It's a waiting game now to see what, if any, of this gets confirmed by the studio. Christopher Nolan is a busy and ambitious filmmaker, and it would be a huge years-long commitment for him to continue on with another superhero franchise like this. Most likely we will have to wait until June 14th when Man of Steel is unleashed and prove to be a box office phenomenon before ANY of this rampant speculation is addressed by Warner Brothers. Plus it's not in Christopher Nolan's nature to reveal anything before its time. But if Man of Steel soars and (fingers crossed) this plan proves true, there would be no bigger or better way to approach Justice League than to have Cavill and Bale headline with Nolan, Snyder and Goyer behind the scenes.

Expect a lot more on this story, confirmations, denials and all...

Anne Hathaway Already Shedding Tears Thinking About Selina Kyle, And Knows Nothing About A 'Catwoman' Spin-Off

So this has been picked up many times over by now, but I can see this as something remaining of online interest until this Catwoman spin-off film is finally confirmed to never happen.

In the video below, Anne Hathaway chats with Access Hollywood's Michelle Beadle more on how she dearly misses her Selina Kyle character from The Dark Knight Rises than any spin-off updates from the film.

“No one’s talked to me about it,” the 2008 Oscar Nominee said about returning to the big screen as Selina Kyle (who was never actually referred to as Catwoman).

"I was at a press Q & A thing the other night for a screening of The Dark Knight, and the moderator asked me, ‘So what was it like to say goodbye to the character?’ And I burst into tears, because I miss her,” she said.

“It just makes me cry. I miss her. I love Selina so much and I love her presence in my life and getting to… I’m crying again.”

“So assuming there was enough Kleenex in the world, I would love to do a spin-off.”

Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt Bridge Christopher Nolan's 'Batman' Trilogy and 'Justice League' ?

Looks like we will take a break this week from the Star Wars: Episode VII rumor mill and move over to the rumblings regarding Warner Bros.' Justice League. With Man of Steel director Zack Snyder admitting to staying the course with his reboot of Superman leading into Justice League, a new rumor has surfaced today.

If you haven't seen The Dark Knight Rises, you may want to stop reading here...

According to sources talking to Hitfix, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to 'absolutely' appear as the new Batman in Justice League, which is looking to hit the big screen in 2015.

Since director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale have retired their take on Batman, and Nolan has stated he will have no involvement with Justice League, it has been widely assumed that a rebooted version of the Caped Crusader would have to be introduced in the DC all-star team up film. But with Levitt's Officer John Blake inheriting the cape and cowl at the conclusion of TDKR, the decision to carry the character over and into Justice League would not only bring an additional familiar face alongside Henry Cavill's Superman to Warner Bros.' big screen answer to Marvel's The Avengers, but would more importantly provide a quick and easy shortcut to incorporate Nolan's entire Batman trilogy into the ongoing big screen DC Universe.

According to Hifix's Drew McWeeny:
"Now here's where things get interesting. The more insistent the drumbeat has become, the more poking around I've been doing, and it's looking like we may see Gordon-Levitt in the suit earlier than that. They're a long way from filming anything Justice League related, but they appear to be solidifying deals for Gordon-Levitt and, potentially, at least one other actor from the Nolan films to do… something."

Now the implication here is that there are plans for a big reveal cameo in next summer's Man of Steel, linking Gotham and Metropolis well before Justice League hits theaters. Though Man of Steel is the only big screen opportunity for WB on the horizon as of now, so it's either this or nothing.

Additionally, if another actor from the Nolan films were to join Levitt (according to Hitfix's source), you could conceivably place Michael Caine (Alfred) with him in Wayne Manor or the Batcave (perhaps watching a news report of Superman), or have Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon) stand along side Levitt's new Dark Knight as Superman flies over Gotham with the Batsignal in the sky. Taking a heavy cue from the Marvel Studios post-credits cameos, a brief shot is all it takes to get the ball rolling and neatly wrap these films together.

Factor in as well that Nolan is producing Man of Steel, so none of this would go forward without his knowledge, or blessing. Obviously all of this is complete rampant speculation, but for WB it would provide a solution to not having to start a entirely new big screen DC Universe from scratch with next year's Man of Steel, and incorporate Nolan's brilliant body of work.

Another other option is to also include Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in Justice League, and not scrap the ambitious sci-fi groundwork laid down in that 2011 film. And with thousands of active members in the Green Lantern Corps, Reynolds could easily do a quick cameo and step aside for another to join full time in Justice League (though its highly likely Reynolds and the GL cast signed a multi-picture deal with WB).

Where Marvel masterfully built their big screen universe one film at a time, cross-over cameo by cross-over cameo beginning in 2008's Iron Man and leading into The Avengers, DC/WB does not have the luxury of time or a busy upcoming film slate to mirror that feat before Justice League hits in 2015.

If The CW Made A High School Prequel To 'The Dark Knight,' You'd Have 'GOTHAM HIGH'

File this under 'The Internet Is Awesome." Check out this brilliant mash-up of teen comedies that could not have done a better job of placing the all-star team of Gotham City's heroes and villains together in high school during their awkward teen years.

The gang's all here: Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), Bane (Tom Hardy), Harvy Dent (Aaron Eckhart), The Joker (Heath Ledger), John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and other subtle surprise appearances from the Batman universe.

This is by far one of the better made faux film trailers, and one that makes you wish it were actually real.

'The Avengers' Was "Appalling," Says 'Dark Knight' Cinematographer

It seems not everyone was thrilled to bits with the wham bam big action popcorn epic that was this summer's The Avengers. Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan's go-to Director of Photography and collaborator, had some choice comments regarding Joss Whedon's billion dollar super hero adventure.

"I thought “The Avengers” was an appalling film," the Academy Award Winner bluntly told Arts Sarasota in an interview.

"They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, 'Why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off.' It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling," he said.

Pfister won an 2010 Oscar for his cinematography on Nolan's mind-bender Inception, and earned three additional nominations from Batman BeginsThe Prestige, and The Dark Knight. While his criticism could be viewed as a direct jab at his fellow cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, who lensed The Avengers, it is also a direct shot at director Joss Whedon, whose job is to collaborate and ultimately sign off on the visual style, camera angle, and lighting design in each and every shot in the the film.

Nolan's and Whedon's storytelling styles have two distinctly different aesthetics to them, and few would disagree that what they delivered to audiences with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises were apples and oranges when it comes to a summer movie experience (which both happen to be based on comic book characters). Earning over a $1 billion at the worldwide box office, calling The Avengers "appalling" puts Pfister in a distinct minority.

'The Dark Knight Rises' Blu-ray Release Set For December 4th

Check out the trailer for the Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Rises, which will be available as a Blu-ray Combo Pack and Digital Download on December 4th.

The conclusion to Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy has grossed nearly $1.060 billion worldwide since its July 20th release, and has broken records on IMAX screens.

Details on what will be included on the highly anticipated home release have yet to be announced, but I would not count on the Director's Cut that has been rumored to be waiting in the wings. Christopher Nolan has approval on the final cut of his films, has stated in the past that he does not overshoot on the set, so what you see in theaters is his conclusive cinematic vision.

"I tend to try and weed things out on paper because it's crazy expensive to shoot things that aren't going to be in the film," Nolan told MTV in July. "It also takes up a lot of time and energy. Pretty much with all my films, there are very few deleted scenes, which always disappoints the DVD crowd."

While speaking to GQ, The Dark Knight Rises costume designer Limmy Hemming told the magazine there was more to Bane's origin scenes that did not make the final cut of the film, which ran a generous 165 minutes.
"The other thing that you should have seen during that sequence is him being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn't got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he's learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he's wearing an early version of his waist belt. It's showing support, but it's not the finished one he eventually wears. He's also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together."
Whether this footage is included on the Blu-ray remains to be seen. We can hope for a few deleted tidbits, or perhaps storyboards of un-filmed scenes from the original script, but a full-on extended version of the film is unlikely (though I would be happy to watch any extra footage regardless, the film could use a few more beats to flesh out certain parts).

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Bourne Ends Batman's Box Office Reign

It was a monster of a weekend for counter programming. With the box office still battling stiff competition from the London Olympics, The Dark Knight Rises threepeat reign at the top had challenges the from actioner The Bourne Legacy, the comedy The Campaign, and the cinematic safety net for senior citizens Hope Springs.

When the dust settled, Universal's gamble on a Matt Damon-less Bourne film starring Jeremy Renner was the pic that finally knocked The Caped Crusader off the streak it had enjoyed since its July 20th opening. The Bourne Legacy took in over $42 million in its debut weekend, easily sailing ahead of the Warner Bros. one-two punch of The Campaign in second place with over $27 million, and The Dark Knight Rises at number three with over $19.5 million. It's worth mentioning that TDKR is now sitting pretty with over $835M in worldwide receipts.

Sony's Total Recall reboot took a total nosedive in its sophomore week, plunging a whopping 68%, slipping from the top spot last week to number six with $8.1M in ticket sales. Not even cracking the $50M mark yet does not bode well for recouping its reported $125M price tag.

Next week brings the action all-star line ups of all line-ups, The Expendables 2. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jean Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren. I think that's just about everyone.

1. THE BOURNE LEGACY -  Weekend Gross: $40.2M
2. THE CAMPAIGN - Weekend Gross: $27.4M
3. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - Weekend Gross: $19.5M, Total: $390.1M
4. HOPE SPRINGS - Weekend Gross: $15.6M, Total: $20M

THE INTERNET IS AWESOME: Batman Maybe

What we don't need truth be told is the umpteenth viral parody rendition of Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe. But you have to admit, when something is done well, it deserves to be shared. The cast featured here spoofing The Dark Knight Rises is spot on in their homages and physical likenesses to the characters from the film. If you can still get through the catchy pop smash, there are genuine amusing moments to behold as these guys get their Bat Dance on.

Beware though, this video contains original lyrics that closely mirror the plot of the film, and reveal major spoilers if you have not yet caught the conclusion to the big screen Batman trilogy.

Thanks to The Mary Sue for catching this fun video.

THE INTERNET IS AWESOME: Bane After Batman

Check out this Funny Or Die short starring Saturday Night Live alum Chris Kattan as Bane seven years following the events in The Dark Knight Rises. The masked villain is trying to put a new life together for himself in Gotham. Not only has he lost substantial muscle tone, but is enrolled in anger management classes, tries online dating, and has 275,000 hours community service ahead of him.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Total Recall' Can't Take Down 'Dark Knight Rises'

The Dark Knight Rises had little trouble this weekend taking the top spot for a clean threepeat victory at the box office with $36.4M. Sony's Total Recall starring Colin Farrell was the only major contender against Christopher Nolan's conclusion of his epic big screen Batman trilogy, and came up short trailing TDKR by over $10M.

Total Recall, which took to big special effects and a straightforward darker storyline over the campy 1990 Arnold Classic, didn't click with critics either, scoring only 31% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This week The Dark Knight Rises also became the third quickest movie to hit $300M in domestic ticket sales, crossing that mark in 12 days. The series' previous installment, 2008's The Dark Knight did it in ten days, while the all time champ, The Avengers, hit the mark in nine this summer.

Worldwide The Dark Knight Rises has amassed over $733 million since its July 20th debut, with a large play on IMAX screens. Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man has spun a world wide web to the turn of nearly $678 million, while Seth MacFarlane's Ted still holds extremely strong approaching $281 million in worldwide ticket sales.

1. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - Weekend Gross: $36.4M, Total: $354.6M
2. TOTAL RECALL - Weekend Gross: $26.0M
3. DIARY OF A WIMPY KID - Weekend Gross: $14.5
4. ICE AGE 4  - Weekend Gross: $8M, Total: $131.5M
5. THE WATCH - Weekend Gross: $6.3, Total: $25.3
6. TED - Weekend Gross: $5.5M, Total: $203.4M
7. STEP UP REVOLUTION - Weekend Gross: $5.3M, Total: $23.1
8. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN - Weekend Gross: $4.5M, Total: $250.8M
9. BRAVE - Weekend Gross: $2.8M, Total: $223.2M
10. MAGIC MIKE - Weekend Gross: $1.7M, Total: $111.2M

Next week there are three major releases, and have classic counter programming all over them. Universal unveils the Matt Damon-less actioner The Bourne Legacy, Warner Bros has The Campaign with the one-two punch of Will Farrell and Zack Galifianakis, and for the older set there is Sony's Hope Springs starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.

With the final week of the Olympics upon us, which has been eating away at movie attendance, some big questions come into play: How long will The Dark Knight Rises remain at the top stop? Can the Bourne franchise move forward with Jeremy Renner in for Matt Damon? Will the powerhouse comedic team of Ferrell and Galifianakis equal a hit (bear in mind the teaming of Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in The Watch did not)?

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Dark Knight' Rises Above 'The Watch' And 'Step Up'

The Dark Knight Rises dominated the box office in its third weekend of release, taking in $46 million in ticket sales, and soaring past the two major new releases, 20th Century Fox's The Watch and Summit's Step Up Revolution.

It was a tougher weekend to get people out to the movies when compared to the same period last summer. According to Deadline, domestic ticket sales were down nearly 22% factoring in the Olympic Opening Ceremonies on Friday night with the remaining repercussions from the Aurora, Colorado tragedy.

As of this weekend, Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight Rises has earned $289 million in domestic ticket sales in its first ten days of release. 2008's The Dark Knight had earned over $313 million in its first ten days.

When combined with the $248.2 million overseas, TDKR's worldwide take is now over $537 million. It's also worth noting it has $38 million from IMAX screens, a nice haul coming from the extra prestige of nearly 72 minutes of the film shot in the format.

Ted holds on strong, with $7.4M this weekend. With a total of $193.7 million, the big 200 is well within reach for Seth MacFarlane's R-rated talking teddy bear comedy.

The Amazing Spider-Man, the other big screen superhero in the top ten, earned $7 million this weekend, and nearly $655 million worldwide since its July 3rd release.

1. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - Weekend Gross: $46M, Total: $289M
2. THE WATCH - Weekend Gross: $13.3M
3. ICE AGE 4  - Weekend Gross: $13.2M, Total: $114.8M

The Joker's Whereabouts In 'The Dark Knight Rises' Revealed

If you were wondering exactly where The Joker was during the events of The Dark Knight Rises, the answer can be found in the official novelization of the film. There was speculation on how, if at all, the clown prince of crime would be mentioned in context of the ongoing story arc following the events of The Dark Knight. Director Christopher Nolan was adamant on respecting Heath Ledger's legacy by making no reference to the villain in the conclusion of his Batman trilogy, much less including a cameo of any kind through unused footage or the use of another actor.

In The Dark Knight Rises: The Official Novelization, author Greg Cox reveals that the Joker was not locked away in Blackgate prison along with the all the other criminals who were freed during Bane's takeover of Gotham, but appropriately resting as the last resident of Arkham Asylum.
"Now that the Dent Act had made it all but impossible for the city’s criminals to cop an insanity plea, it (Blackgate Prison) had replaced Arkham Asylum as a preferred location for imprisoning both convicted and suspected felons. The worst of the worst were sent here, except for the Joker, who, rumor had it, was locked away as Arkham’s sole remaining inmate. Or perhaps he had escaped. Nobody was really sure. Not even Selina."
