Watch Today's THE HOBBIT Worldwide Fan Event LIVE Here at 5pm EST!

As promised, NerdyRottenScoundrel.com will be streaming Warner Bros.' special The Hobbit Fan Event the event to you live as it happens at 5pm EST / 8pm PST, which will be beamed around the world wide web from four theater locations in New York, London, Los Angeles and New Zealand.

CNN's Anderson Cooper will anchor the event from New York City, and will be joined by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) and Orlando Bloom (who reprises his The Lord of the Rings role of Legolas). Bloom is currently on Broadway in Romeo & Juliet, and unfortunately Ian McKellen (also on Broadway with Patrick Stewart in Waiting for Godot) is not listed on tomorrow's bill.

It wouldn't be a Middle-Earth worthy event without Peter Jackson, who will be participating from Wellington, New Zealand.

Expect to see some new footage from the film, a Q&A from the cast and film makers, as well as some surprises to ramp up expectations for the movie. And fingers crossed, perhaps Ian McKellen will make an unannounced appearance from New York...

The cast will be led by Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The ensemble cast features Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug), Evangeline Lilly(Tauriel), Lee Pace (Thranduil), Luke Evans (Bard), Ken Stott (Balin), James Nesbitt (Bofur), and Orlando Bloom (Legolas). Martin Freeman Talks Playing Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which has amassed over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales since its release in December, made its debut for home viewing on 3D Blu-ray and DVD earlier this week with an impressive amount of bonus features. Director Peter Jackson returned to New Zealand to film the highly anticipated prequel trilogy to The Lord of the Rings, and fans returned to theaters in droves to see what he had up his sleeve, and we have two more chapters on deck for December 2013 and 2014.

You can read my review of the film, as presented theatrically in 3D and 48 frames per second HERE.

I was thrilled to cover the press junket in New York City in December as a producer for Access Hollywood, and had the opportunity to talk to Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis, Sir Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage in one-on-one interviews shortly before the film opened.

Below are excerpts from my chat with Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins, the title Hobbit of the trilogy who talked about the good chemistry he had with the cast of, discusses filming his very first scene on the set with Andy Serkis in the crucial cave sequence between Bilbo and Gollum, and why his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch wanted the role of Smaug (who will appear in the second installment).

Below are excerpts from the Andy Serkis chat, he is always enthusiastic to talk about the technical behind-the-scenes magic that provide the visual backbone for huge fantasy films like this. I had previously geeked out with him during an interview for Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011, you can see some of that here.

This time we chatted up the performance capture involved for bringing Gollum to life and how the technology has improved over the years, the crucial 12-minute cave scene featuring Gollum and Bilbo Baggins, his dual role on the set as actor and Second Unit Director, and how he deals with fans who feel the need to do their best Gollum imitation when they meet him.

You can also read his response when I asked him about possibly one day directing an installment of Star Wars. Although in the time since this interview was conducted, J.J. Abrams has signed on for Episode VII, there is still going to be a lot of opportunities in the future.

'The Hobbit' Reveals Its First TV Spot

The first TV spot for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released, which in its 30-second running time, blends its darker elements with the film's at times whimsical nature.

The first chapter in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy prequel to The Lord of the Rings, An Unexpected Journey will follow Martin Freeman, as the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, as he is joined by a whole new eclectic group of Middle Earth's heroes and villains in addition to returning Rings cast members Ian McKellan (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins), and Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins).

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to hit theaters in 3D and IMAX on December 14th. Additional select theaters will screen the film in 48fps, which was the native format Peter Jackson shot the film in.

Peter Jackson Confirms 'The Hobbit' Will Be A Trilogy

Rumors have been running rampant as of late that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, the upcoming two-part prequel to The Lord Of The Rings, would be expanded into a trilogy. There has been no shortage in Hollywood these days of splitting the final chapters in big franchises into two installments, just look at Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. The speculation regarding The Hobbit getting the same treatment has ranged from simply splitting the planned second chapter, 2013's There And Back Again into two parts, to going as far as to regroup the entire production in New Zealand for extensive additional shooting which would bridge the gap between the series' two time frames.

Peter Jackson released the following statement on his Facebook Page today confirming that The Hobbit will indeed hit the big screen as a trilogy of films.
"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J
While principal photography has wrapped on the films, it has always been Jackson's practice to schedule additional shooting for pick-ups along the way. His statement today does not elaborate exactly on the how or the what the third film will depict. But when asked about adding the third chapter in July at Comic-Con, he had this to say to Hitfix:
"That's a discussion we're having, yeah," Jackson said. "We have certainly been talking to the studio about some of the material we can't film, and we've been asking them so we can do a bit more filming next year. Which, I don't know what would come of that, whether it'd be extended editions or whatnot. But those discussions are ongoing."
Jackson has additional supplemental material written by Tolkien he can use as the source material for fleshing out the years in between the conclusion of The Hobbit and the first scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring. Whether this is his plan or not remains to be seen. When asked at the press conference at Comic-Con, this is what Jackson had to say further regarding the possibilities:
“It’s very premature. I mean we have an incredible source material with the appendices because ‘The Hobbit’ is obviously a novel but we also have the rights to use this 125 pages of additional notes where Tolkien expanded the world of ‘The Hobbit’ published at the end of ‘Return of the King’ and we’ve used some of it so far (and just in the last few weeks as we’ve been wrapping up the shooting) and thinking about the shape of the story. Fran and I have been talking to the studio about other things we haven’t been able to shoot and seeing if we could persuade them to do a few more weeks of shooting. Probably more than a few weeks actually, next year, and what form that would actually end up taking. The discussions are pretty early. So there isn’t really anything to report but there’s other parts of the story that we’d like to tell that we haven’t been able to tell yet.”
Variety's Josh Dickey revealed on his Twitter feed that the third chapter will be released in the summer of 2014, whereas the first two have firm December 2012 and 2013 release dates set.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit theaters in 2-D, 3-D, and IMAX on December 14, 2012.

This comes hot on the heels of Jackson's announcement of the official wrap for the massive 266 day shoot of the two-part 3-D prequel to his big screen Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Ten New Stills From 'The Hobbit' Revealed

In Entertainment Weekly's annual Comic-Con preview issue, the magazine scored ten new stills from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first installment of the epic two-part 3-D prequel to big screen The Lord Of The Rings trilogy set for a highly anticipated release on December 14th.

In addition to the cover featuring Sir Ian McKellan (reprising his role as Gandalf the Grey) and Martin Freeman (as Bilbo Baggins), inside the pages the sneak peek at the film reveals a new CGI image of Gollum, Gandalf standing in the Shire, a first look at Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett reprising their roles as the elves Elrond and Galadriel, and a studio portrait of newcomer Richard Armitage in costume as the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield.

In addition to Evangeline Lily and Billy Connelly's inclusion to the cast, confirmed to return from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy in cameo roles are Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Ian Holm (elder Bilbo Baggins), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Christopher Lee (Saruman), and Andy Serkis (Gollum and Smegol).

Here is the official synopsis of the film from New Line / Warner Bros.:
The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.
Peter Jackson returns as producer, co-screenwriter, and director of the films, which were shot back to back in New Zealand with the EPIC RED cameras for 3D. Its also worth noting a huge change in visual presentation will be pioneered with this major studio release. Jackson and his team have used 48 frames per second to shoot the film at, whereas the industry standard has been half that, 24 frames per second since the inception of film making. This promises to present a very different visual experience for the two Hobbit films on the big screen.

You can check out here what Elijah Wood had to say about returning to New Zealand and reprising his role as Frodo Baggins from the Sundance Film Festival.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for December 14. The conclusion of the two-part event film, The Hobbit: There And Back Again, is scheduled to hit theaters in 3D December 13, 2013.
