Jamie Foxx Wants To Play Spawn. Is He The Mystery Oscar Winner Todd McFarlane Has Been Talking About?

Jamie Foxx was among the massive star studded list of guests at Comic-Con last week. The Academy Award winning actor sat down with Movies.com at Comic-Con last week to talk up many things, but specifically his role as the villain Electro in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

However when asked about other roles he was eager to tackle, he revealed another comic book icon was on his short list.

"Spawn is one, yeah," he said. "And Mike Tyson. Those are two roles I would just love to do. I'm aggressively pursuing them."

Besides the general possibilities involved now that Foxx has fessed up to his extreme interest in playing the anti-hero, his revelation also lines up with what Image Comics co-founder and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been saying in regards to casting the lead in the long time in-the-works big screen reboot for the popular character.

I caught up with McFarlane at the 2012 Toy Fair, and at that time he told me in vague terms some of the things going on with the film's progress, which in present context seem to fit Foxx's interest to a tee.

"An Academy Award winning actor came out to the office and wants to be in it," McFarlane told me last year. "He bugs me every week to get the script done cause he had an idea, and I told him my idea. He said 'Fine, I love your idea. Now let's get it done.'"

Given Foxx's Acadmeny Award for his portayal of Ray Charles in Ray, and unless there is a major reboot planned on behalf of McFarlane that includes re-casting Spawn as a non-African American Oscar winning actor, it seems safe to assume Foxx is our man.

Oh yeah, and then there is this 2011 pic from McFarlane's WhoSay page with the caption:

"August 26, 2011 Jamie Foxx came by the office today, great guy, I drew him a quick sketch of Spawn for the road. TODD"

McFarlane continued about his mystery actor, eager to see Spawn back on the big screen.

"So he or his agents phone every week: 'Is he done with it? Is he done?' I have to write, produce, direct, and I keep getting distracted with other things in my life. There's nobody to blame but myself," he admitted last year.

McFarlane also has a prioritized plan to see Spawn return to the big screen. "The feature is still the number one priority getting that one out," he said.

"I've had the story for ten years. R-rated, dark, sort of a psychological terror. It’s the world that we all know. Everything is real except for one thing. There is something moving in the shadows. Some supernatural force is moving around. And a couple of the people who think they see the shadow move aren’t in the best state of minds, so they don’t even know if its their own personal paranoia or not," he said about the tone of the film.

"No super villain. Nothing. Just a scary creep show that you and I intellectually know to be a being called Spawn. So as I get to the 20th Anniversary, I'll make the concentrated effort to at least get the script done. And depending on what happens there, production should come fairly quickly afterwards," McFarlane predicted last year.

"I just want to do a gritty movie that’s sort of about our world that feels like the movie The Departed, but there’s something moving in the shadows every now and then," he promised.

Jamie Foxx is a very in-demand actor, and we will have to see if he can move into a second comic book franchise.

Film Review: THE WOLVERINE ★★★☆☆

Wolverine, one of the most beloved and popular comic book heroes of all time and perfectly embodied on film since 2000 by Hugh Jackman, has finally gotten his due in the mutant's latest big screen actioner, simply titled The Wolverine.

It's not to say that this film is perfect (it's a damn noble effort), but following Logan's first solo adventure, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a God-awful mess on numerous levels, and 2006's disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand, the brooding hero has had rough times on the big screen. Thankfully The Wolverine bucks the comic book movie trend of going bigger and cramming pointless team-up opportunities to instead directly focus on where it belongs, on the ageless man armed with adamantium claws.

Directed by James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma, Walk The Line, Knight and Day), the stranger in a strange land approach to this film finally allows Hugh Jackman to turn in a performance for over two hours that resonates with the necessary dark depth. Hugh IS the star of this movie, and rightfully so.

Following a chilling eye-opening flashback sequence set in World War II-era Nagasaki where an imprisoned Logan saves a Japanese soldier from a nuclear demise, we catch up with him decades later trying to forget the events of X-Men: The Last Stand (but aren't we all?). The ageless hero is still haunted by the death of Jean Grey (Famke Jannsen) by his own hands, and living in self exile in the wilderness. He is no longer a hunter. No longer the Wolverine. That is until a violent scuffle ensues with a group of outback hunters who carelessly take out a grizzly bear Logan had cordially shared the forest with.

A mysterious visitor, Yukio (a fantastic Rila Fukushima) has tracked Logan down, all the better now that he's got the claws out again, to bring him to Japan on orders from Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi), the solider he saved in Nagasaki who is now technology mogul lying on his deathbed.

Yashida offers to rid Logan of his curse of immortality so he can live a normal life, fall in love and die old like an ordinary man. Of course this requires Yashida assuming his mutant powers via the decades of medical and technological research his company has done. Logan passes on the idea of helping the old man out and so begins the meat of the story that bridges the script's various other arcs.

Despite his protests, Logan is nonetheless stripped of his healing abilities. Yashida inevitably dies, and his daughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto) is targeted for a kidnapping at the fallen mogul's lavish funeral. Now seemingly mortal, Logan takes multiple brutal bruisings along the way trying protect Mariko from mysterious hit men and ninjas lead by a sexy blonde mutant scientist known as Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova).

What works on the story level here is the low key extent of the overall stakes. There is no race against time / world in danger plot line. This is strictly a personal mission for our angry reluctant hero. The film is firmly grounded and committed to sticking to one man's objectives without throwing in Earth shattering consequences if he fails. Protect the girl and get his powers back (and maybe beat up many bad guys). Done and done. To hell with all his former X-Men cohorts and what they're up to. The title of the film could not be more appropriate.

Jackman once again brings his intimidating physique to flex shirtless and often on the big screen, practically berating everyone in the theater chomping away on buttered popcorn and slurping an extra large soda to get their asses to the gym. Well at least that's how I felt. Gone may be his signature leather jacket and cigar, but he does get a motorcycle and the character has never come across better as a vicious killing machine when called to arms, or claws in this case.

Wolverine fights ninjas (yes fans, elaborate awesome ninja fights), and some of the chase sequences are as bad ass as they are thrilling (I find it interesting that I was utterly bored by any of the similarly staged sequences in Mangold's 2010 snoozer Knight and Day). A thrill-a-minute scene atop a speeding bullet train was done no justice when the clip was previewed online earlier this month. It really is something to behold in a theater.

The Japanese setting is gorgeous and refreshing (even if a lot of it was shot in Australia). The culture shock of sending Logan over seas mixes up the expected X-Men formula on a fantastic level. Though it should be noted the storyline is predominantly adapted from a seminal '80s comic book storyline written by Chris Claremont, and adapted further for the screen when Mangold assumed the reigns from original director Darren Aronofsky.

Famke Janssen in flashbacks provides the only major specific call back to the previous mythos of the series as Jean Grey, Logan's true love who gained godlike powers and was forced to kill in X-Men: The Last Stand. If you know the backstory, it adds to Logan's state as a haunted soul. But her inclusion is also vague enough to not make new viewers feel left in the cold. There are some other brief throwaway X-Men references within the movie, but overall the film does a good job existing as a stand alone adventure up until the closing credits.

There is the bad news. But a good thing can only last so long, and the film takes a wrong amp'd up left turn in the latter third act, choosing to put an end to the perfectly good pacing and scale I enjoyed for over 90 minutes.

Let's start with Svetlana Khodchenkova’s Viper, who as a whole is the out-of-place weak link in this otherwise grounded tale. The blonde snake-like mutant presents herself in various sexy green outfits and snarls with the big screen comic book villainy that would have been perfectly fine for the other mutant filled X-Men movies. The Wolverine as a whole does a damn great job of separating itself from the typical super powered good-versus-evil arcs by stripping the story to a one-off Logan solo mission. When Viper does her thing (hissing and spitting venom, snake tongue and all), in this case it's almost disappointing to acknowledge the larger mutant contingent that nonetheless exists in this continuity. Her exaggerated presence and inclusion as the only other on-screen mutant also detracts from Logan's otherwise solo super powered spotlight, and made little sense to me in the overall grand scheme of things.

The raw feral animal we only saw brief glimpses of in X2: X-Men United is our main Wolverine here, and he's a welcome star. It is a very violent (but bloodless) PG-13 film and Wolverine makes no apology for a high body count. The sarcasm and humor are taken way down, but that's not to say Jackman isn't allowed to bring his signature charm to the character. We also witness Logan fall in love again, and for the first time persevere as a mortal wounded man with a fear of death which adds to the fully unexplored scope of the character. It's also a relief to have him drop a few curse words at appropriate moments (hopefully one day for you too Jack Bauer). Profanity rolls off Logan's tongue naturally given his temperament, and it makes you wonder what else an all out R-rated Wolverine adventure would be like.

Unfortunately the 3D adds very little to the film. Mangold's style here doesn't lend itself to it. These days I don't think directors should be held entirely accountable for a non-jaw dropping 3D experience when the format decision can be made ultimately and unfortunately above their pay grades.

It is disappointing that the third act almost unexpectedly takes The Wolverine into an unnecessary over-the-top formula finish. It by no means breaks the film as a whole, but the big bang FX-laden finale doesn't hold true to its overall back-to-basics premise that was cruising along just fine in its simplicity as a hero's personal journey.

Overall the film delivers enjoyable kick ass character driven action and interaction, and is without question a must-see for fans of the character. We are treated to the best turn from Jackman in his signature role yet, as a snarling violent loner, with the undertones of both a deadly hit man and a Samurai. It scores all the right marks in regards to what has been missing so far from the big screen Wolverine.

Hands down the film stands worlds above the previous solo effort. This is a different animal altogether that gets so much right for what fans were waiting for and is a huge brave leap forward in adapting the character. However The Wolverine nonetheless feels like it eventually gets spooked by its own shadow and jumps back into a blockbuster safety zone instead of successfully crossing the finish line with the same tone in which its journey began. And it's the fear of landing triumphantly according to the original flight plan that prevents the film from attaining true greatness from start to finish.

There is also, to nobody's surprise, an effective mid-credits scene that is not to be missed. Most X-Fans worth their weight are well aware of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, and although The Wolverine manages to successfully stand on its own as it relates to the series' overall continuity, this anything-but-subtle nod towards what is to come was too good an opportunity to exclude. Needless to say when the scene played out, the audience I attended with (to use the technical term), went completely apeshit with excitement. Well played indeed.

The Wolverine opened in 2D and RealD 3D on July 26th.

First Look At Caesar In 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'

We have our first look at the older, angrier and battle-ready Caesar from the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The follow-up to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Andy Serkis returns as the revolutionist ape leader, and again providing unparalleled performance capture work that brings the character to life with CGI magic. Joining the cast on the human side this time out are Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, White House Down), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission: Impossible III) and Gary Oldman.

Director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) offered this update to Collider regarding Dawn's plot as it relates to continuing on ten years after the first installment:
"Caesar talks at the end of the movie, he has some level of speech. I wanted to make sure we’re continuing to go along the path of evolution without missing it, it was so delicious to watch in the first movie. It’s not like now they are talking in verse. Hopefully the movie is emotional and thrilling as you watch the apes come into being … The ape civilization is in the woods, between Vancouver and New Orleans, the world after what happens with the simian virus flu. The two main locales are San Francisco and the Muir Woods where the ape civilization is born. We’ll be doing a little shooting in San Francisco as well. A lot of the Louisiana shooting was to build huge wood sets outside in the woods to add realism, enormous exterior streets. We’re shooting in the rain, in the wind, all on location out in the open in the elements."

Fox also released this viral video in time for Comic-Con warning humanity of the Simian Flu that threatens the population.

Official synopsis from 20th Century Fox:
"A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth¹s dominant species."
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set for July 18, 2014.

Even if you don't watch the entire 40 minute show in the second clip, which includes news regarding The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, the first video of Hiddleston enjoying himself as Loki, chewing up the scenery and playing with the crowd truly makes for a Comic-Con must-see.

'Avengers 2' Title Revealed at Comic-Con!

Joss Whedon gave Comic-Con's Hall H a huge surprise by showing the first teaser to the Avengers sequel set to hit theaters in 2015, and the surprising title of the film was revealed as well: Age of Ultron. An exciting development for sure for core fan base, but also means little to the casual moviegoer unfamiliar with the non-cinematic Marvel lore.

Here is io9's rundown of the teaser presentation.
"Whedon basically showed a short teaser in which soundbytes from the first Avengers played over video showing metal being put together, with sparks flying. At first, it looked like a new Iron Man mask — and then we pulled back and it revealed the trademark mask of the Avengers' great foe, the robot Ultron. And then we read the above movie title."
While its best never to assume anything, but the Thanos post-credits tease from the first Avengers installment has us on the side of thinking he would be the big villain that re-assemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes. But now with Ultron entering the mix, the landscape and possibilities have changed with the addition of the Marvel android baddie. We will wait now and see how far Thanos figures into Guardians of the Galaxy, and whether he will instead be the ultimate force to fight down the line in Avengers 3.

IT'S OFFICIAL!! Superman & Batman Set To Share The Big Screen! Team-Up Set For 2015!

"I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you," says a bloodied and battered Batman to Superman at the end of The Dark Knight Returns, which was quoted at today's Warner Bros. Comic Con panel. With that, the Superman and Batman logos appeared together on Hall H's big screen, not so subtlety setting the stage for the follow-up to Man of Steel.

It looks like Henry Cavill will not be flying solo in the 2015 sequel to this summer's dark Superman reboot. Warner Bros. has plans for Batman to join him, and likely oppose him, on the big screen which will expand the cinematic DC Universe and test the waters ultimately for the studio's Justice League.

At the conclusion of this afternoon's WB / Legendary Pictures Comic-Con panel, Zack Snyder confirmed the heavily rumored World's Finest team-up of DC's two biggest heroes (following reports of the expected news scooped earlier today by the LA Times' Hero Complex and The Hollywood Reporter). Henry Cavill will once again fly as the Man of Steel, but Christian Bale has repeatedly gone on the record as having hung up the cowl and cape for good as Batman with 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

“It’s official that we are going to make another Superman movie," Zack Snyder told the crowd."I’ve poured through the DC universe for a way to tell this thing.” Snyder the brought Man Of Steel actor Henry Lennix on stage who quoted Batman from none other than Frank Miller's iconic 1986 graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, which saw the two heroes go head-to-head in a bloody battle.

The team-up angle looks to be the studio's solution for re-introducing Batman to moviegoers instead of a full-fledged solo reboot, allowing the now familiar face of Cavill to anchor the next actor cast as the Caped Crusader. Referencing The Dark Knight Returns as source material is certainly a way to really drive interest for the target fan base, and may deliver unexpected conflict to those not in the know.

Although reported by Hero Complex earlier in the day and was NOT confirmed, WB is rumored to also have the Flash on the film slate fast track for 2016, followed by the long-awaited Justice League big screen adventure in 2017.

As for MOS 2, Zack Snyder will return as director with a script by David S. Goyer, as previously announced. Man of Steel and The Dark Knight executive producer Christopher Nolan may also be on board in some capacity. Interestingly enough, Goyer has already penned a Flash screenplay, which has met with a positive response from Warners.

Also of note, no word of Wonder Woman's plans for movie stardom, or the future of Green Lantern, both of whom would be expected to unite along side Superman and Batman in Justice League. Whether these or any other DC heroes (Aquaman?) get the pre-League reboot treatment is still up the air.

Though the passage chosen from The Dark Knight Returns leave little doubt DC and WB will continue down the moody path set up in Man of Steel, and will have the two icons going head-to-head.

Here is the official WB Press Release:
"BURBANK, CA, July 20, 2013 – On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution,Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcomingfilm brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date inSummer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.”

First Sneak Peek At The 'Veronica Mars' Movie Trailer From Comic-Con!

Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell and producer / director Rob Thomas were joined by the cult show's re-united cast including Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Francis Capra, Percy Daggs III, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino and Chris Lowell in Hall H at Comic-Con. With only two days left of shooting for Veronica Mars: The Movie, which took the concept of Kickstarter funded filmmaking to a whole new level of success, the cast and crew presented fans with a five minute video which also contained the first trailer to the $5 million fan-funded film.

"I wanted to do an Agatha Christie movie with everyone in one house, very few sets and very few guest stars," Thomas told the crowd during the Q&A. "And that's not what we did. We made an incredibly ambitious, sprawling low-budget movie. We wanted to include all of those smaller parts that fans really loved."

Cobie Smulders Will Appear As Maria Hill in 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Pilot, Possibly More Cameos Down The Line.

We know Agent Coulson lives, but he won't be the only big screen Marvel character to hit the small screen this fall. It looks like Joss Whedon was able to talk CBS and ABC into playing nice regarding How I Met Your Mother and The Avengers star Cobie Smulders. During the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, the first episode was screened for fans in Hall H and Agent Maria Hill in fact makes an appearance in the highly anticipated TV show set to debut on September 24th.

"Due to legal reasons, we can't show you a clip," Joss replied, "so we're just going to show you the episode," Whedon told the Comic-Con crowd. He not only serves as executive producer on the show, but also wrote and directed the pilot.

“I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she IS S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark’s. Also, if she’s in it I get to hang out with Cobie.”

With her long-running CBS hit comedy entering its final season, there might be breathing room for more appearances from Cobie down the line, and certainly more if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. goes into season two.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg (Coulson), Ming-Na Wen (Agent Melinda May)and Brett Dalton (Agent Grant Ward), Ian De Caestrecker (Agent Fitz), Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Simmons), and Chloe Bennet (Skye).

The 'OLDBOY' Red Band Trailer Is Here!

"Ask not why you were imprisoned, ask why you were set free."

Courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, we have the highly anticipated first RED BAND trailer to Oldboy, Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's Oldeboi, the dark and disturbing (to say the least) Korean cult revenge film based on a Japanese manga series of the same name. Following the release of the poster on Monday, we now have our first sneak peek at the film which promises to be darker than its source material, which if you have seen the original, is one hell of a high bar to hit.

Lee’s remake, starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley and Samuel L. Jackson is set for an October 25th theatrical release.

Warning, this is the RED BAND trailer:

Official Synopsis:
"OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation."
